UPDATE, 10:40 a.m. Thursday: As its computer problems persist into a second day, Southwest Airlines said Thursday that it was extending its three-day fare sale another day.
That means that the sale on tickets will now end at 11:59 p.m. Friday, not Thursday as originally planned.
“We recently launched a fare sale that created an extraordinarily high volume of customer demand and impacted Southwest.com functionality, We apologize to customers for any inconvenience and impact to travel plans,” Southwest spokeswoman Brandy King said.
“Southwest teams have worked nonstop to correct website functionality, and we continue to work on fully restoring the site. We have extended the fare sale from end of day Thursday to end of day Friday, allowing customers extra time to book,” she said.
Callers to the airline’s reservations centers are facing wait times of more than one hours.
The sale, for travel between Aug. 24 and Dec. 16, offers one-way fares of $49 to $149. Fridays and Sundays aren’t included, and days around Labor Day and Thanksgiving aren’t included, either.

As the three graphics show, visitors to Southwest’s main website and mobile website are still running into difficulties in shopping for fares.
It also seems to be affecting other areas of the system, such as the ability to check on the status of flights.
We were able to use the booking system for an international flight. The international reservations are handled by a different reservations system than the domestic reservations. That might explain the success on the international booking.
We hope to get an update from Southwest later Thursday morning.
